Industrial design creates sensual symbols, images, shapes and solutions. Embedded in the faculty of architecture and mechanical engineering, the bachelor degree course was introduced in 2011 and puts concepts, objects and products in a cultural context. Tasks focus on issues of social responsibility and ecological consequences.

Designers create what people desire and should desire. Consequently, the theory must address the conflicting priorities of utilitarian and free design, of art, engineering, architecture and industry. However broad the definition of ‚design‘, designers – like architects – are generalists in a transdiscipline and specialists in design. Industrial design develops figures, signs, images, forms and solutions that can be experienced with the senses.

As an integral element of the Faculties of Architecture and Mechanical Engineering, the BA course introduced in 2011 places concepts, objects and products in a cultural context. Assignments steer students towards issues of social responsibility and environmental consequences. Students are offered broad-ranging design theories, with industrial design training occupying a central position throughout the course. The learnable skills include the use of pen, pencil and colour, image processing, handling 2D and 3D programs, graphics, three-dimensional design and model making. The technical focus is provided by a fundamental knowledge of materials and shaping techniques together with principles of construction and production methods. The theory and history of design illuminate the subject’s international contemporary and historical panorama. Seminars and practical assignments provide realistic tools to prepare students for a successful career in all its entrepreneurial facets. Our students complete the course having acquired skills in the conception, presentation and technical and commercial development of industrial design projects.

As employees in a design studio, design department or a company’s product development office they will be able to handle tasks on their own initiative and will have qualified for a Masters course in the broader environment of industrial and product design.
